Simply Good Media:

The Poop: Recycle This

August 29, 2008 posted in Recycle and Reuse

There’s been a lot of talk about the dangers of plastic and dog poop lately, but most pet owners may not realize they are contributing to an environmental situation that is more wide-spread than a power-line destroying art installation.

Just leaving the dog pooh behind after your walk around the block is not acceptable, and sometimes illegal. Rather than go to jail for tacky behavior, (most) dog owners scoop that poop with zillions of plastic bags every year. Okay, perhaps zillions is an exaggeration, but National Geographic reports, “…between 500 billion and a trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide each year.” And about 1-3% of those bags wind up outside of the landfill system, strangling fish and waterfowl alike.

Plastic bags are an indiscriminate killer, and luckily the people at Reusablebags.com have a way to curb the bloodshed. Instead of getting plastic bags at the grocery store (or buying bags designated for your pet’s waste) buy these super pooper picker uppers that are 100% biodegradable and 100% compostable (bags break down in 30 days).

Made from cornstarch and vegetable oil and printed with soy based ink, these bags make us wonder what else can be made with a couple of ingredients for beef stroganoff. You can pick up fifty for $5.25 at reusable bags.com, and then argue with your spouse/roommate/sibling about whose turn it is to take Fluffy on his daily constitutional.

Personally, I use all those little bags that seem to come into the house uninvited.  You know, the catalogue that comes in a plastic wrapper, the newspaper whose magazine section in wrapped in plastic, some post comes in a plastic bag envelope.  Surely using these bags is OK?

I heard around the internet that these, when put into a landfill, don’t actually break down the way there are supposed to… :/
